Are
there Side Effects from Laser Vision Surgery?
Laser
vision surgery has become quite commonplace in the last few years.
But some people are still concerned about potential complications
and so are reluctant to have the procedure done. It should be
understood that the outcome of this type of surgery is very good
with less than one percent of those who have it experiencing any
ongoing vision issues. This is quite an improvement over the
statistics from the late 1990s when compactions ran at five
percent. But it is important to understand that even with this
small risk, there still is a risk to having this kind of
surgery.
Most of the
problems that may come from having laser vision surgery will
disappear in the first few days after it has been done. Some may
take a couple of weeks to pass. The common problems include trouble
coping with glare and diminished night vision. There can also be
the ongoing feeling that there is something in the eye when there
is not. Sometimes there is more sensitivity to light, dry eyes or
diminished visual clarity. Take some comfort in the fact that even
the military believes in this process. Over the years they have
tried to find ways to make American troops less reliant on glasses
and contact lens. Of the sixteen thousand soldiers who had laser
surgery in the three year period beginning in 2000 eighty six
percent of them had their vision restored to 20/20. They would not
promote this to their personnel if they did not feel the risks were
reasonable for a good outcome.
The only real
concern for laser vision surgery negative results is a
noninfectious, inflammation that can happen sometimes. It is not
clear what causes DLK and so it is likely caused by more than one
thing. The symptoms occur in the first week after the laser surgery
has been completed and they include some pain and blurred vision.
The eye appears to have tiny grainy cells that look like grains of
sand. If left to itself it can seriously damage the eye. But
if treated rapidly it should not cause any long term
damage.
